Shop of James Nelson & Sons, Butchers

We tend to think of shops in the early twentieth century as being small, family run businesses, with perhaps two or three premises in one or two towns, but Nelson’s butchers were a national chain.  In 1912 they had at least 10 branches in Barrow alone. Sankey photographed several of these.
