Born in Silloth, working class Artist Zoe Forster moved to London to study Fine Art at the age of 18, at the age of 23 she was accepted onto the Master of Fine Art Media course at The Slade School of Art, UCL. Moving back home mid way through her masters due to the Covid 19 outbreak, Zoe's work became even more engrained within her community and it was in this time she began to really embed herself in the Cumbrian Arts Scene. Since then, shes worked for multiple organisations, on a wonderful array of projects, as a lecturer in the Arts and eventually beginning her own Arts Organisation for her own community.
My work is deeply invested in community; in the landscape of a community, the dialect, the history, cultures and heritage of a place. I often explore context before materials and process, the materials forging themself around whatever the context calls for – clay dug from the hills of a place, salt from the coast, rocks from the local building site, exploration and imagination whilst investigating stories enables a well rounded piece. I am always interested in Working Class histories, levelling the playing field through my own actions, because of this I founded The Creative Space Cumbria CIC, to allow for creative intervention within my own corner of West Cumbria.
