Núria Rovira

Artist Profile

Núria Rovira is a multimedia artist from Catalonia based in England since 2017. After graduating from Lancaster University, Núria co-founded The GAP Studio, an arts community engagement organisation located in the seaside town of Morecambe from where she initiated a program of public events and exhibitions with a team of young artists. Núria later moved to Liverpool, where she joined CBS Studios and worked for Open Eye Gallery as a creative producer developing socially engaged photography projects for two years.

Her research has been supported by the Lancaster Data Science Institute, leading a 4 month investigation on data collection practices in tidal landscapes, and was selected by Fundación Botín to take part in a research lab lead by the artist Shilpa Gupta. In 2023 she was awarded DYCP funding by Arts Council England to develop technical skills in sound and interactive programming for site specific research. Núria has recently graduated from an MFA at the Ruskin School of Art (2024) and will take part in the upcoming Efònic festival as the 2025 artist in residence. Her work has been exhibited at CBS Gallery, Bridewell Studios, Full of Noises, St Edmund’s Hall, and LCB Depot.

Continuing our collaborative practice, Mel Galley and I are weaving sound and narrative to search Morecambe Bay’s landscape for the haunting presence of a bridge that has not yet been built.

“My work seeks to activate places and objects with sound and video. Recording, collecting, and returning, I look for traces of unstable absences. Flickering lights, sand trails, broken notes, empty shells; things that are not fully themselves, fragments and gaps of what fails to remain or refuses to disappear. As an artist, I want to assist this subtle persistence. Sound and light are good mediums for this, they operate like layers, draping over what’s already there, taking its shape, channeling its voice, but importantly, not filling its empty spaces. I also use participation, collectively moving and listening, to reshape the experience of space without altering it. Through these interventions, the artwork wants to take part in the imagination of the site, channeling other (disturbing, contradictory, dreamt, forgotten) versions of itself. Indicating these alternatives cuts into possibility, opening fissures that lets us peer into the ‘what if’ held in the interior of things.”
